GOT MUSIC? GET JAMENDO! Let's Play Record Producer!

The LBCC OPEN SOURCE CLUB continues its journey as a bridge between the tech savvy and the tech casual with a new initiative we are calling:

LET'S PLAY MUSIC PROMOTER

Why play Music Promoter?

LBCC Students can have a real say in what songs receive airplay on local radio, support independent musicians, and learn about how open source licensing strategies can be integrated with market based copyrights.

How will this work?

There are tens of thousands of great FREE songs at a very cool website called JEMENDO -- you can visit it at www.Jamendo.org.

Our hope is that students at LBCC will discover great songs or albums at Jamendo and share these songs with other friends at LBCC.  What might happen, through this listening to music shared freely and legally with the Creative Commons licenses, is that we will identify and agree on a song that is a TOP TEN HIT!

We might love Lady Gaga, and Maroon 5 or Taylor Swift but they have an army of music industry experts working toward their success as experts hone their look, sound, and publicity.  The talented musicians sharing their work through Jamendo do not have a team of experts to help them get their music airplay.  As a matter of fact, many of these talented artists have no industry backing at all.  They are simply putting their music out there on Jamendo in the hope that fans will hear their music and share it.

This is where we come in.

It is not easy to find the Top 10 hits hiding the in archives of Jamendo.  But it can be done.  For every 100 songs stored at Jamendo, there is a song just as good as any catchy tune receiving radio airplay today.

The LBCC OPEN SOURCE CLUB wants to spend some of our term this year learning about the best songs at Jamendo.  We want to create a way that students on campus can share the song and vote on it.  Right now, the only tool we have to hear your nominations and votes is this blog post on our blog, in the COMMENTS area below.  From this moment forward, you are invited to visit www.jamendo.com and find songs that you think other's in our community might vote for as a TOP 10 HIT.  Use the comments area below to post the link to the song.

Here's how:

Poke around Jamendo until you find a song you like.  When you find a song you like, one that might be much better than the one I am linking to below, just paste in the link like this:

http://www.jamendo.com/en/track/347378/fashion

At this point, other people commenting in the comment thread will be able to listen to the song and leave comments.

So... let's get started!

When we come up with a few songs that might hold up as TOP 10 HITS, we will contact local radio stations and get those songs some airplay!  And who knows, maybe we can get a couple of those bands to play concerts right here at Linn Benton Community College!

This is something that we can all do together.

Our first meeting this term will be on Friday, September 28 in front of the Student Government Offices in the LBCC Quad near the clock tower.  We will be burning CDs of songs that we have discovered and we'll be sharing the songs.

We will also be continuing our ongoing projects this year, like the Repairapedia and the Bring Your Dead Computer Back To Life Days, but for now, we're focusing on MUSIC!

Come join the fun.

A Brave New Year

We had a great time last year. A couple of different activities we did went fabulously, namely the Bring Your Dead Computer Back To Life Day and the Xonotic gaming session we did spring term.
One upcoming thing I am very excited about is the Welcome Day event
Wednesday, September 19, 2012 • 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., at LBCC Albany Campus: we will be manning a booth to show off just how classy/enjoyable open source software can be.
We have lots of ideas that we are getting ready to throw into gear involving some pretty amazing organizations and people (think Diaspora, Jamendo, Github, Sourceforge, and Mozilla). Please leave us a comment bellow if you would like to be involved or if you have some input for us.

Lets Play a Game

We're going to be doing a LAN party with a cool game Xonotic Friday, June 1st. This will be a great example of how open source software can enrich our lives. We had a couple of dry runs that were really great. This time we will be doing it in a lab with more computers and faster computers which should really make this an amazing event. We'll also have snacks, interesting people, and (with your help) some fun competition. The current times are from 2pm to 8pm although we may not go quite that long if too many people have too leave early. We hope to see you there.

Questions? Thoughts? Concerns? Leave us a comment and we'll try to get back to you.
